TVET Education Trainers in Coast Retooled on CBET.
A total of 106 trainers from Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in coastal counties took part in a two-week capacity-building program on Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET).
The training was conducted at the Ahmed Shahame Mwidani Technical Training Institute in Mombasa.
This initiative, spearheaded by the Kenya School of Technical Vocational and Educational Training (KSTVET), sought to equip educators with contemporary skills and industry-oriented approaches, ensuring that students graduate with job-ready competencies.
Since October 2024, around 1,511 trainers have undergone CBET training as part of the government’s efforts to align the TVET curriculum with industry needs and bridge regional skills gaps.
Ruth Kinyanjui, the CBET Master Trainer Lead, explained that participants were being introduced to various methodologies, learner engagement techniques, and assessment strategies to enhance their instructional effectiveness.
She emphasized that the training was structured to align education with industry requirements by providing trainers with the necessary tools and expertise to effectively implement CBET learning.
Enhancing Professional Growth
David Nyambuti from the State Department of TVET pointed out that this programme, now in its fourth cohort, was designed to prepare educators to deliver high-quality competency-based education.
He remarked that the training was providing educators with the necessary expertise to develop professionally while adapting to the requirements of competency-based teaching.
He further underscored the significance of collaboration with industries, emphasizing that the dual training approach integrated classroom learning with hands-on experience.
