TVET Institutions Urged to Prioritize Practical Training.
Technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions in Kenya have been encouraged to focus more on the practical aspects of their courses.
Switzerland’s Ambassador to Kenya, Mirko Giulietti, emphasized that practical training equips trainees with diverse skills, enhancing their employability in the competitive job market.
Speaking at a graduation ceremony, Giulietti noted that relying heavily on theoretical lessons limits graduates’ potential to thrive in self-employment and industry roles.
During the event, 76 apprentices graduated under the “Propeller” program, a collaborative initiative by the Hali Foundation and Theat International.
The program, modeled after Switzerland’s dual-learning approach, aims to provide hands-on skills training to young people.
Giulietti stated that the program not only equips youth with necessary skills but also benefits private sector companies by developing a motivated and skilled labor force to ensure business continuity.
Key Features of the “Propeller” Program
The program includes:
- Apprenticeship and learnership opportunities.
- Industrial training components.
- Tools and resources for hands-on learning.
National Policies Addressing Unemployment
The Ministry of Labor and Social Protection highlighted efforts to tackle unemployment through policies designed to address the mismatch between skills supply and market demand.
One such policy, the National Skills Development Policy, seeks to bridge the gap by aligning training programs with industry requirements.
A ministry representative explained that the government has analyzed the root causes of the skills mismatch and introduced measures to better prepare students for the labor market.
The representative added that industrial training levels and in-center training initiatives are key components of these policies, supporting both students and employers.

Dual-Learning Model as a Solution
The dual-learning model integrates theoretical knowledge with practical experience, enabling learners to gain valuable skills while working.
Giulietti emphasized that this approach offers a comprehensive solution for preparing motivated labor forces for the future.
He described the initiative as a win-win for both trainees and the private sector, ensuring companies’ sustained success and productivity.
