Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) to Review Curriculum for its Institutions.
The curriculum for Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) institutions is set to undergo significant changes, allowing students to receive certification after three months of training in specific skills.
The Technical and Vocational Education Training Principal Secretary (PS), Dr. Esther Muoria, explained that the curricula would be divided into smaller modules. This proposal will be closely examined during an upcoming consultative meeting with TVET Principals to finalize the way forward.
Dr. Muoria stated that she had invited TVET Principals to Nyeri National Polytechnic for discussions aimed at reaching a consensus on the proposed changes.
The reforms will enable students to obtain a certificate after three months, equipping them with employable skills. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to continue their training for another six months to acquire a higher-level certification.
“I have invited TVET Principals to Nyeri National Polytechnic; I am going to sit with them and we are going to reach a consensus on the way forward,” she said.
Speaking at the 1st Graduation Ceremony at Mawego National Polytechnic in Homa Bay County, the PS emphasized the government’s collaboration with the industrial sector.
This partnership aims to ensure that students are absorbed into the job market swiftly. Some industry players have already engaged with institutions to demonstrate the feasibility of producing skilled graduates within a short period.
Presidential Directive and TVET Reforms
Dr. Muoria highlighted that, in line with the Presidential Directive, it is impractical to have students spend a full year learning tailoring. The ongoing reforms in the TVET sector are designed to enhance equity, accessibility, and relevance in technical training.
She reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring every constituency has a TVET institution, with over 80 percent of constituencies already having operational centers.
Efforts are underway to equip every constituency with a fully functional TVET institution, ensuring that no skilled individual remains unemployed.

“Plans are underway to ensure that every constituency has a well-equipped TVET institution,” the PS said.
The graduation ceremony saw 1,980 students receive their certificates. Addressing the graduates, the PS acknowledged their hard work, dedication, and teamwork.
She remarked that the event marked not just the end of their training but the beginning of their professional journey, encouraging them to use their skills to shape Kenya’s future and beyond.
