University Student Announce Protest Against New Funding Model
Amid growing discontent with the new university funding model, students are organizing to voice their dissatisfaction with the policy implemented by the Kenya Kwanza administration.
The University of Nairobi’s Student Council, in a notice dated August 16, announced plans to mobilize students for a demonstration on September 2.
The focus of the protest is the recent hike in tuition and accommodation fees under the new funding model. The Student Council emphasized the need for a united front, urging all students to participate in the demonstration to express their concerns.
Student Demands
The students are particularly disillusioned by the fee increases, which they claim were implemented without proper consultation with the university’s management.
Their primary demand is the reduction of accommodation fees, which they argue are disproportionately high given the challenging economic conditions.

They are calling for a decrease in accommodation fees from the current Ksh42,000 per semester to Ksh15,000, citing the poor living conditions despite the high costs.
The students are also rejecting the new funding model, arguing that education should not be treated as a profit-driven commodity.
They demand a reevaluation of the policy, which they believe unfairly assigns students to financial bands that do not accurately reflect their families’ economic situations.
Stakeholder Concerns
This protest plan is unfolding against a backdrop of widespread concern from various stakeholders about the feasibility of the new funding model.
The confusion and opposition among students have been significant, with many questioning their placement in financial bands under the new system.
In response, the government has invited student leaders from all universities to State House in an attempt to garner support for the controversial funding model.
Meanwhile, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos has directed public universities to admit all students unconditionally, irrespective of their ability to meet the required household contributions immediately.
