UoN Student Leader Rocha Madzao Disappears Following Alleged Abduction
The University of Nairobi Students Association (UNSA) is facing a crisis as its President, Rocha Madzao, has reportedly gone missing. Despite ongoing search efforts, no information has surfaced regarding his whereabouts.
Reports indicate that Madzao was abducted on Friday night by unidentified individuals while he was on his way home. According to a fellow student, Madzao was last in contact with the UNSA Chief of Staff around 9 p.m. during a brief phone call.
During this call, Madzao expressed that he was being harassed by some men. The call, which lasted only 23 seconds, ended abruptly before Madzao could disclose his location, after which his phone was unreachable.
The UNSA has issued a public appeal for any information that might lead to finding Madzao.
They emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that they have had no communication from him since the Friday night incident.

The association circulated a post requesting anyone with details about Rocha’s whereabouts to come forward.
Incident Prior to the Disappearance
Earlier on Friday, an unidentified group allegedly attempted to arrest Madzao near Hall 9, but the attempt was unsuccessful. This occurred shortly after Madzao addressed the students, giving the government a one-week ultimatum to revoke the new education funding model.
He warned that failure to do so would result in a demonstration scheduled for September 2.
In his address, Madzao called on all students and citizens of goodwill to join the protest, urging them to come prepared with dancing shoes and vuvuzelas, as they would defend the right to free and compulsory education for every child.
Student Protests and Response
On Saturday, in response to Madzao’s disappearance, a group of students blocked Uhuru Highway in protest. However, the police swiftly intervened and dispersed the protesters.

The protest was prompted by a “call to action” from UNSA Secretary General, Ramesh Saxena. He emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the disappearance of a university president, even for a brief period, is not something to be taken lightly.
Saxena urged all student leaders across the country to stand in solidarity until Rocha Madzao is found.
