Why Nyamira University Construction May Take Longer Than Expected.
The realization of Nyamira University’s establishment faces delays following a court order disputing the proposed location, according to Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba.
The CS explained that legal battles have hindered progress, with individuals filing numerous cases to contest the chosen site. He stated that the Ministry of Education could commence student admissions immediately if these court cases were withdrawn.
Ogamba elaborated that the Commission for University Education (CUE) had recommended Kiabonyoru High School as the most suitable location for the university.

However, a faction of local leaders opposed this decision and took legal action. This opposition has significantly stalled the project’s progress, despite the site being approved by experts.
CS Addresses Concerns
While attending Kisii Cultural Week at Kenyoro Secondary School on December 31, Ogamba addressed public concerns about the university’s delay. Members of the public questioned him on why the project had not commenced despite CUE’s recommendations.
Ogamba explained that President William Ruto had endorsed Kiabonyoru as the university’s site six months earlier, based on expert reports. However, he emphasized that the ministry must respect the court’s decision until the matter is resolved.
Area MP Joash Nyamoko criticized certain elected leaders from the county who had moved to court to block the establishment of the university at Kiabonyoru.

Nyamoko expressed disappointment, stating that the project aimed to benefit local youth by offering educational opportunities. He lamented that the leaders’ actions were obstructing these aspirations.
One notable figure opposing Kiabonyoru as the university’s site is West Mugirango MP Steve Mogaka. Nyamoko underscored that such disputes have derailed the vision of assisting the community’s sons and daughters, delaying their dreams of higher education.
