Why Students Are Often Placed in Unchosen Courses: KUCCPS Clarifies.
The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has provided clarification on the recurring issue of students being placed in courses they did not select. This explanation comes amid growing concerns from students affected by such mismatches in their university placements.
A major cause of misplacement is the high number of applicants for medical programmes. KUCCPS receives over 10,000 applications annually for medicine-related courses, yet fewer than 1,000 students are successfully placed across all universities that offer them. This discrepancy between demand and available slots results in many students being allocated to alternative programmes they did not initially apply for.
The trend shows that most students express a strong preference for medicine, often indicating it as their sole career aspiration. This concentrated interest in one field contributes significantly to the high number of unsuccessful placements in preferred programmes.
Another factor leading to course misplacement is students’ inclination toward certain universities. Data from KUCCPS indicates that applicants consistently favor older, well-established institutions, often disregarding newly chartered universities. This preference creates an imbalance that forces the placement body to redistribute students to less selected universities to maintain equitable student distribution.
Broadening Career Choices
To address this issue, KUCCPS encourages students to explore a wider range of programmes beyond medicine. The agency emphasizes that all academic programmes have potential and marketability, depending on how one uses the acquired qualifications after graduation. It discourages the perception that certain courses are superior, urging applicants to value all available options.

Applicants are also advised to invest more time and thought when selecting their preferred programmes. Rushed or poorly considered choices often lead to challenges during the processing of applications. KUCCPS offers a color-coded system within its portal, distinguishing between public and private universities to help applicants make informed and time-efficient decisions.
The placement service highlights that the recurring issue of students being placed in undesired courses largely stems from oversubscription in specific programmes and institutions. By diversifying choices and carefully navigating the application process, students can enhance their chances of successful placement in suitable courses.
