Youth Encouraged to Enroll in TVETs for Dongo Kundu SEZ Employment.
Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Ogamba reaffirmed the government’s dedication to expanding and enhancing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.
He emphasized that these institutions would be instrumental in equipping young people with marketable skills, ensuring they are prepared for employment opportunities.
During the official launch of the Likoni Technical and Vocational Training (TVC) Centre of Excellence in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, CS Ogamba stated that the facility would generate a skilled workforce to serve over 58 industries expected to establish operations in the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
He elaborated that the institution’s training programs would produce qualified individuals in fields such as refrigeration, welding, plumbing, ICT, construction, and infrastructure engineering.
Support for Training and Infrastructure
To guarantee the institution delivers high-quality graduates, the CS assured that the government would provide necessary infrastructure, equipment, and trainers.
He urged the youth to take advantage of TVET institutions to acquire relevant skills for employment. He highlighted that the Likoni TVC currently accommodates 810 trainees, with an enrollment target exceeding 3,000 by the year’s end.
The CS also revealed plans to supply 100 computers to enhance learning and announced that the government had allocated Sh10 million to construct a perimeter wall, safeguarding the 12-acre institution’s land.
“It’s a critical TVC and as government, we will support it. It has the potential to expand. Currently, it has 810 trainees with a target of over 3,000 by the end of this year,” stated the CS.
In a move to operationalize the Dongo Kundu SEZ, the government is set to sign an agreement with the African Export-Import Bank. The signing, scheduled for Friday, will be officiated by the Head of State, who is currently on a week-long development tour in the Coast region.

Likoni MP Mishi Mboko appealed to the government to establish a Huduma Centre in the constituency to prevent residents from traveling to the neighbouring Mvita constituency for essential services.
She further advocated for the reintroduction of ferries at Mtongwe to alleviate congestion at the Likoni Crossing Channel.
