Youths Urged to Enroll for Technical Courses for Better Paying Jobs Abroad.

Youths across the country are being encouraged to embrace technical courses as a means to enhance their employability and economic independence.

With unemployment being a significant challenge among the youth, technical education offers practical skills that are directly applicable in the job market.

This approach not only addresses joblessness but also provides opportunities for self-employment and global competitiveness.

Nandi County Advocates for Technical Skills

Nandi East Sub County Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Ngalia Ndaya has called on young people to take up technical training to equip themselves with skills that enhance their competitiveness in the global job market.

Speaking during the Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nandi Hills Stadium, Ndaya noted that technical education is designed to provide students with hands-on knowledge that prepares them for employment opportunities.

“For those who want to work abroad, if you want to be paid well acquire technical skills before going abroad. Those with technical skills easily thrive in the abroad job market compared to professionals,” said the DCC.

Ndaya explained that skilled workers contribute significantly to combating unemployment and added that technical skills offer a better chance of thriving in international job markets compared to traditional professions.

He emphasized that technical courses are available to individuals of all educational levels, including class eight dropouts.

To support this initiative, Ndaya revealed that the government has allocated funds to assist students pursuing technical courses.

He urged those who completed their education between 2000 and 2023 to register for the January 2025 intake through local chiefs’ offices as part of the ongoing registration drive in Nandi East Sub County.

In addition to technical training, Ndaya encouraged youths to explore online platforms for income generation. He highlighted the abundance of online jobs available, urging young people to take advantage of the digital economy to address modern unemployment challenges.

tool for economic empowerment

In Kilifi County, Malindi Member of Parliament Amina Laura Mnyazi has also advocated for technical courses as a tool for economic empowerment.

During a visit to Weru Technical and Vocational College (TVC) in Jilore Ward, Mnyazi highlighted the importance of technical skills in reducing unemployment.

The MP, who recently received welding and fabrication machines worth Sh13 million from Canada for the college, encouraged local youths to enroll at Weru TVC.

She revealed plans to elevate the institution to a national polytechnic and is working with stakeholders to enhance its capacity.

An awareness campaign targeting Malindi, Magarini, Ganze, and Kilifi North constituencies has already increased the college’s enrollment from 350 in February to over 1,650.

“These efforts have borne fruit because the institution has been able to increase its student recruitment from 350 in February to more than 1,650,” Ms Mnyazi said.

Mnyazi announced that 150 students would be sponsored by the local National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) to pursue courses of their choice next year. She also urged investors to construct accommodation facilities near the college to support the growing number of students and instructors.

Skills Recognition and Crime Reduction

Weru TVC Principal Julius Kasuva urged school leavers to apply for courses through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) to benefit from government scholarships under the new funding model.

He added that the institution has introduced a recognition of prior learning (RPL) program to certify untrained artisans in the area.

Langobaya location chief Hesbon Kajimbi commended the college for reducing criminal activities in the area by engaging youths in technical training.

Kiharu Fanikisha Programme Offers Hope to Youths

In Murang’a County, over 1,200 youths from Kiharu constituency are set to benefit from the Kiharu Fanikisha Programme, launched by area MP Ndindi Nyoro.

This initiative, fully funded by the local NG-CDF, will sponsor young people and young parents to undertake short technical courses in various local colleges and vocational institutes.

“I want to encourage young people to consider self-employment, which is like a blank check, your skills and determination dictate how much you earn every month and your possibilities for growth are limitless,” said Ndindi.

The program, which will begin on December 16, will cover tuition fees for courses such as hospitality, cosmetology, and driving. Driving trainees will also receive smartcard driving licenses upon completion.

Ndindi urged the youth to embrace self-employment, noting that it offers limitless opportunities for growth based on one’s skills and determination.

To make the program accessible, training centers have been strategically distributed across the constituency to minimize transport costs for beneficiaries. Ndindi assured that the initiative would be conducted annually, with adjustments to the courses offered based on community needs.

Beneficiaries Celebrate the Initiative

The Kiharu Fanikisha Programme has been met with gratitude from beneficiaries. Macharia Njoroge, a father of two, expressed his appreciation, noting that he had been unable to afford training since 2020. He hopes the program will help him secure better opportunities.

Similarly, Maureen Wambui, set to study hospitality, praised the initiative for giving her the chance to pursue a course she has long desired.
