18,000 New Grade 9 Classrooms Set for Completion by January
The Basic Education Principal Secretary, Dr. Belio Kipsang, announced that the government intends to build approximately 18,000 classrooms for Grade 9 students in junior schools next year.
He detailed that 11,000 of these classrooms are being developed with the assistance of development partners, while around 7,000 are being constructed through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF).

Teacher Recruitment and Training
Dr. Kipsang noted that the government has recruited 56,000 teachers to ensure the success of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
“I would like to announce and assure the country that we are adequately preparing for the transition from Grade 8 and 9 next year,” Kipsang said.

Furthermore, there are plans to hire an additional 20,000 teachers. He emphasized the ongoing review of primary school teachers’ capacities to prepare them to support junior secondary schools effectively.

Commitment to CBC Success
Dr. Kipsang reassured the public that the government is fully committed to the success of the CBC. He mentioned that they are collaborating with partners to establish the necessary infrastructure.
Plans are also underway to ensure a smooth transition from Grade 9 to Grade 10 by 2026.
He assured parents that there is no need to worry about the CBC’s future, as the government is dedicated to overcoming the current challenges and ensuring the program’s success.
Speaking at the opening of the 96th Kenya Music Festival in Eldoret, Dr. Kipsang highlighted the importance of the event in education.
He stated that President William Ruto is committed to promoting arts and talents. The festival, led by Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, will run for 12 days, gathering 130,000 students and participants.
The theme of the festival is “Talent Development for the Growth of the Creative Economy,” and it is hosted by 58 schools.
