MPs Urge Kenyans to Oppose NG-CDF Abolition, Says it Supports Education Bursaries
Members of the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) Committee have urged Kenyans to safeguard the fund to ensure ongoing grassroots development, amid proposals to abolish it.
Committee chairperson Musa Sirma (Eldama Ravine) emphasized that the fund has been instrumental in supporting many underprivileged households by paying school fees and improving essential learning infrastructure across the nation.
He spoke on this issue during the disbursement of NG-CDF bursaries to needy students in Dagoretti-North Constituency, Nairobi.
Sirma pointed out that the fund’s contributions to upgrading educational facilities are evident and described any discussions about scrapping the NG-CDF as misguided.
The Debate Over Abolishing NG-CDF
The proposal to abolish the NG-CDF has sparked considerable debate. Nominated Senator Tabitha Mutinda has been advocating for this change as part of austerity measures to cut government spending.
Mutinda believes that eliminating the NG-CDF would streamline government operations and help address the nation’s growing debt crisis. She has argued that MPs should focus on their legislative responsibilities rather than being involved in development projects.

During the same event, Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi urged parents to complement the efforts of the NG-CDF by ensuring that any outstanding school fees are paid on time.
She highlighted that her efforts to distribute NG-CDF bursaries fairly were not enough and that parental support is crucial to keeping students in school.
Kitutu Masaba MP Clive Gisairo also called on parents and university students to familiarize themselves with the new university funding model and ensure their applications are correctly submitted to avoid missing out on critical government funds.
Addressing School Dropout Rates
Nairobi County Woman Representative Esther Passaris encouraged parents to keep their children in school as a way to combat the rising cases of school dropouts. She stressed the importance of parental involvement in ensuring continued education for their children.
