The camp concluded with the Tech4Good competition, where participants formed multinational teams to develop technology-based solutions for critical societal challenges.

“It fosters collaboration, leadership, and innovation among young minds, ensuring they are well-prepared to address real-world challenges using technology,” explained Voncuvoji.

Kenyan Students Showcase Innovation

Kenya was represented by ten university students who competed in two teams. One team developed “Mafreeco,” a smart system aimed at mitigating Kenya’s frequent flooding issues.

Drawing from the Swahili word mafuriko (floods), their solution proposed clearing drainage systems of debris to prevent flood damage.

Their ingenuity secured a spot in the Tech4Good finals, where they faced off against teams from South Africa, Mauritius, and Malawi.

Ashley Yigo, a member of the Mafreeco team, highlighted the intensive nature of the camp, noting that they often worked on minimal sleep to refine their project.

She described the experience as thrilling, providing not only a platform to advance their technological skills but also opportunities for cultural exchange and networking with peers from across the continent.

Transformative Learning Experience

The LEAP Digital Talent Study Camp provided students with practical exposure to advanced technologies, reinforcing the critical role of digital skills in shaping the future.

Participants also engaged in cultural exchanges, fostering regional cooperation and mutual understanding.

This initiative is part of Huawei’s broader commitment to developing a digitally skilled workforce in Africa. Sena Voncuvoji, an Africa-China analyst and founder of ReVodution and Jaspora Tokyo, emphasized the program’s transformative impact.
