Laikipia County Grants Automatic Bursaries to Inmates’ Children.
Governor Joshua Irungu has announced that children of inmates serving sentences in Laikipia County’s correctional facilities will automatically qualify for educational bursary scholarships.
This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on incarcerated parents and provide their children with access to education.
During a visit to the Nanyuki GK remand, Rumuruti, and Nyahururu prisons, Governor Irungu assured inmates that their children’s education would be prioritized.
He acknowledged that parents serving jail terms lacked income sources and pledged his administration’s commitment to supporting their families.
While addressing the inmates, to whom he had donated Christmas gifts, Irungu instructed the county bursary board to approve all bursary requests for the inmates’ children. This move, he stated, would ease the burden of educating their children while they remained behind bars.
Donations to Correctional Facilities
The governor toured the facilities bearing gifts not only for the inmates but also for correctional officers. These included food supplies and sanitary items.
He emphasized that his administration would also support reformed convicts by facilitating their reintegration into society.
This initiative aims to curb recidivism by ensuring former inmates do not relapse into negative behaviors.

Governor Irungu revealed plans to involve skilled inmates in teaching at Technical and Vocational Training Institutions (TVETs).
By doing so, inmates trained in various crafts could transfer their expertise to the youth enrolled in these facilities.
This program aligns with the county’s efforts to equip young people with practical skills while providing meaningful roles for reformed convicts.
Additional Facility Support
Irungu further announced additional support for the correctional facilities. His administration will provide tents and chairs to enable inmates to hold internal functions.
Moreover, shaving machines will be supplied, and local dispensaries will be equipped with necessary drugs. A clinical officer will also be deployed to enhance healthcare services within the prisons.
Lydia Achieng, an inmate at the Nanyuki women’s remand facility, appealed for further support from the governor.
She requested learning materials for the facility’s library and the establishment of a paralegal office to assist inmates seeking to appeal their cases in court.
These measures, she noted, would significantly improve the quality of life for incarcerated individuals.
Commendation from Prisons Commander
Laikipia County Prisons Commander Martin Okoko lauded the governor’s goodwill gesture. He highlighted that the initiative would benefit not only the inmates but also the correctional officers who remain on duty during the festive season.
Okoko expressed confidence that these measures would facilitate the reintegration of inmates into society once they completed their sentences.
