Understanding Bursary Applications

In Kenya, bursaries provided through the Office of the President assist orphans and financially vulnerable students pursuing secondary and tertiary education.

These funds are distributed via the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and are allocated to different counties and constituencies to ensure wide accessibility.

The disbursement of these funds is determined by financial need and academic performance, aiming to support students in their educational pursuits. Although bursary application forms may differ by county, they generally follow the same fundamental structure and requirements.

Application Process for a Bursary

Bursary applications in Kenya can be submitted online. Prospective applicants should check the availability of bursary programs on their respective county government websites and download the required forms. For first-time applicants, counties such as Embu require initial registration in their database.

Registration involves submitting personal details, including the institution attended, registration number, academic year, and course. Once registered, applicants can proceed with filling out the bursary application form.

Sections of a Bursary Application Form

Bursary application forms, though varying by county, contain standard sections requiring specific information:

  • Student Information – Applicants must provide their full name, gender, residential details, contact information, name of their institution, category of study, registration number, and other necessary registration details.
  • Required Amount – This section requires a breakdown of the total fees payable to the institution, the amount the student can personally contribute, and the institution’s bank account details for fee payment.
  • Family Background – Information about the applicant’s family, including family size and financial situation, is required. Orphans or students with disabilities must attach supporting documents, such as death certificates or letters from community leaders.
  • Financial Status – Applicants must disclose their family’s financial status, including the gross income earned by family members over the past year.
  • Previous Financial Aid – Students must indicate any prior financial assistance received, such as scholarships or previous bursaries.
  • Student and Guardian Declaration – Both the student and their legal guardian must confirm the accuracy of the information provided.
  • School Verification – Once all details are filled out, the form must be submitted to the institution for verification.
  • Community Leader Declaration – The final step requires endorsement from a local chief or assistant chief to verify the authenticity of the provided information.

Tips for Completing a Bursary Application Form

To increase the likelihood of approval, applicants should approach the process diligently. The following tips can help improve the chances of success:

  • Complete All Sections – Ensure every part of the form is filled out correctly. Incomplete applications are often disqualified.
  • Provide Accurate Information – Double-check that all details are correct, truthful, and up-to-date to prevent automatic disqualification.
  • Apply in One Ward Only – Submitting multiple applications across different wards can invalidate the application.
  • Attach Necessary Documents – Include all required supporting documents, such as the fee structure, admission letter, performance reports, school ID, and national ID.
  • Review Before Submission – Carefully review the form and attached documents to ensure completeness and accuracy before submitting the application.

Bursary Disbursement Timeline

Bursary funds are released quarterly, approximately every four months. However, as no fixed timeline exists, students should regularly check with their school’s finance department for updates. The fund allocation is done annually at the county level.

Eligibility Criteria for a Bursary in Kenya

To qualify for a county government bursary, applicants must demonstrate financial need and prove they are residents of the county issuing the bursary. Evidence of financial status and county residency is required to support the application.

Final Thoughts

Accurately completing a bursary application form can provide essential financial support for education.

Ensuring meticulous attention to personal, financial, and family details, complying with specific county requirements, and verifying all sections enhance the chances of receiving the bursary aid necessary for academic success.
