President Ruto Announces Schools Reopening on Monday Next Week

President William Ruto has stated that all schools would reopen on Monday of next week.

The President stated that the decision was made after consulting with the Meteorological Department, which affirmed that the rains would lessen in the coming days.

Schools were scheduled to return on April 29, 2024, but the Ministry of Education postponed due to widespread flooding across the country.

“All parents are now advised, based on the assessment of weather experts and the government, that it is safe for our children to go back to school.”

The President also announced that the government will allocate cash to the National Government Constituency Development Fund for the rehabilitation of flood-damaged schools.

He made the statements at State House Nairobi during a meeting with grassroots leaders from Kajiado Central and Laikipia North constituencies, who are led by MPs Kanchory Memusi (ODM) and Sarah Korere (Jubilee), respectively.

The President also declared that next Friday has been designated as a public holiday to honor people affected by the floods.

On the same day, the President announced that a massive tree-planting campaign would be begun to maintain and repair the environment, as well as to begin to reverse the effects of climate change.

“On this day, we will plant trees and remind ourselves that the solution to climate change is taking care of our environment,” he stated.

The President announced plans to plant 200 million trees on the day and urged every Kenyan to plant at least 50 trees.

On the devastation of infrastructure caused by flooding, President Ruto announced that the government will collaborate with development partners to restore damaged roadways.
