Machogu Issues Tough Warning to Schools Regarding School Fees, Uniforms

As schools reopen on Monday, the Ministry of Education has urged schools to unconditionally accept students, erasing requirements such as uniforms and school fees.

This implies that no learner will be turned away due to a lack of money or school uniform.

Parents have urged the government to come down on school administrators who violate the rules.

Financial difficulties

According to National Parents Association (NPA) leader Silas Obuhatsa, many parents are facing financial difficulties as a result of torrential rains.

“We have lost many parents and family members. Families are grieving. Some are living in camps, which will make it difficult to recollect themselves and afford to pay school fees by Monday,” Obuhatsa said.

Kuria, on the other hand, asserted that the schools are under more strain because of limited funding and asked for the immediate release of capitation.

Kuria stated that they wanted the money urgently, emphasizing that schools would lack the funds to operate due to the significant impact on parents, who were unable to pay fees.

He added that schools paid off their creditors with the money they had previously received.

On Friday, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu asked county directors of education to compile a list of school principals who charge exorbitant fees.

Education Cabinet Secretary, Ezekiel Machogu, speaking in Trans Nzoia during a tree-planting activity, warned that head teachers who charge parents additional fees would face disciplinary action.

Machogu stated that his government had set rates for all types of schools and that the Kenya National Examinations Council would restore certificates destroyed by the floods.
