Legislators Calls TSC to Confirm Junior Secondary Intern Teachers

Three Members of Parliament have supported the demands by intern teachers for the government to grant them permanent employment.

Narok Woman Representative and Chair of the National Assembly Education Committee Rebecca Tonkei, Marakwet West Member of Parliament Timothy Toroitich, and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro are advocating for junior secondary school (JSS) teachers to be hired permanently by the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC).

Speaking in Narok Town, Tonkei expressed that the government did not make a mistake by enlisting teachers on internship programs for one to two years.

She stated that it is now time for the government to transition these interns into permanent employees.

Tonkei remarked that there is nothing wrong with teachers participating in an internship program like other interns in public service.

She emphasized that intern teachers’ current pay is low, and converting them to permanent employees would allow for higher pay, enabling them to meet their basic needs.

Ndindi Nyoro highlighted that the TSC is the government agency with the highest budgetary allocation.

He stressed that the TSC should confirm intern teachers, especially those in JSS, on permanent and pensionable terms. Additionally, Nyoro urged the TSC to employ another 20,000 teachers in the next financial year, 2024-2025.

Toroitich, the Marakwet West MP, criticized those who pursued legal action to invalidate the employment of intern teachers, a decision that the Court upheld.

He noted that while the Education Committee does not agree with the decision, they respect the court’s ruling.

Toroitich stated that the TSC has received advice to appeal the decision, with the aim of securing permanent employment for JSS teachers.

He also called on the Budget and Appropriations Committee to secure more budgetary allocations for the coming financial year 2024-2025, confirm intern teachers on permanent terms, and facilitate the employment of additional teachers.
