TSC Ends Contracts of JSS Intern Teachers Involved in Protests

Junior Secondary School intern teachers who have been protesting for the past few weeks in pursuit of permanent employment terms have begun receiving termination letters from their employer.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) allegedly sent these letters, dated June 6, citing professional misconduct as the reason for their dismissal.

The letters indicated that the interns’ employment was terminated due to deserting their duties from May 13, 2024, onward.

“The Commission has decided to terminate your Internship engagement with effect from June 6, 2024, on the grounds that you engaged in acts of professional misconduct.”

Efforts to contact the TSC for comments on these alleged termination letters through phone calls and texts were unsuccessful at the time of publication.

According to the TSC, show-cause letters were sent to the protesting interns on May 22, asking them to explain their absence from school.

The TSC instructed the interns to respond within 14 days, warning that failure to do so would result in termination.

The TSC stated that the responses received from the interns were deemed unsatisfactory, leading to the termination decision.

A permanent teacher based in Nairobi, who preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed that the information regarding the terminations had been shared with other staff members.

He reported that two interns involved in the protests had received their termination letters.

The TSC’s communication referenced the show-cause letters issued on May 22, providing the interns an opportunity to explain why their internships should not be terminated due to professional misconduct.

The Commission ultimately found their explanations insufficient, resulting in the termination of their engagements as intern teachers.
