Ministry of Education Calls for TSC Review of Sacked Junior Secondary School Tutors
The Ministry of Education, through Education Principle Secretary Belio Kipsang, has expressed the need for a reconsideration of the dismissal of 742 Junior Secondary School tutors.
Speaking in Nakuru, Kipsang characterized the issue as a labor dispute that falls under the jurisdiction of the Labour Ministry and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), the teachers’ employer.
Kipsang emphasized that such matters are typically addressed within established frameworks for labor disputes, indicating confidence that the current issue will follow the same process.
He highlighted the importance of adhering to due process in resolving the disagreement.
Meanwhile, the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) has taken action by formally petitioning the TSC to reinstate the dismissed teachers.
Additionally, Kuppet has written to the commission requesting the tutors’ reinstatement within 14 days.
Should this deadline not be met, the union has indicated its readiness to pursue alternative avenues, including legal recourse.
Kuppet’s Deputy Secretary-General, Moses Nthurima, affirmed that despite the affected teachers not being union members, Kuppet intends to act in the public interest by representing them in court if necessary.
Initially, the TSC issued ‘show cause’ letters to 10,348 Junior Secondary School teachers, requiring responses within 14 days and a return to work.

Out of this group, 9,606 teachers complied with the directive, while the contracts of the remaining 742 were terminated.
Currently, approximately 46,000 teachers are employed on a contractual basis, highlighting the significant impact of the recent decisions on the teaching workforce.
The strike by Junior Secondary School teachers, which commenced last month at the beginning of the second term, was called off following government assurances regarding their future employment status.
