TSC to Hire 116,000 Teachers by 2027, President Ruto Assures
President William Ruto has pledged that his administration through the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will employ 20,000 health workers and hire an additional 116,000 teachers by 2027.
The president, speaking at State House during the launch of the country’s Fourth Medium Term Plan which extends until 2027, emphasised his commitment to bolstering staffing levels within the health supply chain in alignment with Vision 2030. Ruto outlined his vision, emphasizing key sectors to prioritize during his tenure.
Reportedly, Ruto stated that quality and affordable healthcare remain a central focus of his government, with plans to expand the Social Health Insurance Scheme to cover 10.8 million households. Over the next four years, the government will also focus on digitizing health services and enhancing health infrastructure.
As part of infrastructural development under the Fourth Medium Term Plan, projects include the construction of one million affordable housing units, the installation of 4,600km of high-voltage transmission lines, and the establishment of 37 sub-stations.
These sub-stations aim to connect an extra 2.3 million Kenyans and 30,000 public institutions to the national grid. Ruto also announced the laying of an additional 100,000km of fibre-optic cable as part of the National Optic Fibre Backbone Infrastructure Programme.
The government’s plans extend to education, with intentions to automate the basic education system, expand Technical and Vocational Education and Training, and increase admissions to the National Open University, as well as Open Distance and e-learning.
Ruto announced the adoption and reinforcement of the institutional framework for financing tertiary education.
Transport connectivity and infrastructure development are also paramount, with promises to construct 6,000km of new roads, upgrade 101,755km of existing roads, and build 277 footbridges nationwide.
Regarding agriculture, Ruto emphasised a value chain approach targeting various sectors such as leather and leather products, textiles and apparel, dairy, tea, rice, edible oils, blue economy, minerals, forestry, and construction materials.
The government aims to promote agro-processing, enhance extension services, provide quality farm inputs, and foster cooperative development.
Focus will be on investing in Special Economic Zones and County Aggregation and Industrial Parks, diversifying export markets, and supporting MSMEs in efforts to boost employment.
Ruto also plans to establish Jumuiya cross-border markets and strengthen cooperation with trade partner countries.
Furthermore, Ruto expressed intentions to scale up the financial inclusion fund, known as the Hustler Fund, to increase access to affordable credit for marginalised groups.
Reforms are also on the agenda to create a favourable tax regime, deepen capital markets, improve the lending and investment environment, and attract investors to the Nairobi International Financial Centre.
