KUPPET Teachers Issue Ultimatum Over Unpaid Medical Insurance Remittances
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) in Embu County has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the government, demanding the transfer of their health insurance deductions to hospitals.
The teachers, facing severe hardships due to unpaid remittances, have resorted to organizing fundraisers to cover their medical expenses.
Led by Branch Secretary Jacob Karura, KUPPET has highlighted the dire situation teachers are in, being denied essential medical services because of unpaid deductions.
Many teachers have been forced to hold local fundraisers, known as harambees, to afford medical treatment.
Eric Kim, another KUPPET official, echoed Karura’s concerns, emphasizing the mental anguish caused by the situation. He described it as an added burden for already overworked educators.
Kim stressed that teachers are fed up with being denied treatment at hospitals due to the unpaid deductions.
Call for Government Intervention
Karura warned that teachers have no choice but to take to the streets in protest if the government does not address their concerns within seven days.
He stated that if the remittances are not transferred, teachers will call for a strike, which could potentially paralyze the learning process.
“We are no longer going to stomach this, we are sick, we are tired and we are fed up with always going to the hospitals and then being told that there is no treatment.”
The ongoing frustrations over unpaid medical deductions are taking a toll on teachers’ health and morale, which might disrupt education if their demands are not met.
