CEMASTEA To Empower JS Teachers And Learners On STEM Subjects

The Centre for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) is spearheading a nationwide initiative to enhance STEM education for Junior School (JS) teachers and students.

This outreach program aims to equip participants with essential knowledge and practical skills across various STEM disciplines.

Emphasizing the use of locally available materials, the program encourages creativity and imagination among learners.

By engaging with these resources, students acquire crucial 21st-century skills. This hands-on approach is designed to foster innovative thinking and problem-solving abilities in young minds.

Scope of the Outreach Program

The outreach encompasses a wide range of STEM subjects, including mathematics, integrated sciences (biology, physics, and chemistry), and pre-technical studies.

CEMASTEA officials, equipped with computers, laboratory equipment, and other innovative materials, visited various schools in Garissa County.

Their mission was to inspire and equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary for success in STEM fields.

Amina Sharbaidi, a CEMASTEA trainer, highlighted the agency’s focus on the STEM pathway, emphasizing the national goal of having 60% of learners transition to this pathway.

Amina explained that to achieve this target, it is crucial to raise awareness among both teachers and students about the importance of STEM subjects.

She noted that CEMASTEA brought activities and learning resources to engage students, spark their interest, and ignite curiosity in STEM subjects.

Teacher Training and Feedback

Timothy Masanja, a teacher at Iftin Junior School, shared his positive experience with CEMASTEA’s program.

He stated that the training provided practical skills and new methods for addressing STEM concepts, which he plans to incorporate into his teaching.

Timothy emphasized that the program has enhanced his ability to engage students in the learning process, ultimately aiming for maximum educational outcomes.
