Education CS Migos Tells Off University Funding Model’s Critics

He acknowledged the concerns raised and assured that the Ministry is committed to resolving any issues within the coming weeks.

Adjustments and Revisions

Migos pointed out that while the funding model has existed for 29 years, recent changes were made to the needs-testing instruments.

These adjustments were implemented to ensure that students who genuinely require government support benefit most from the available funds.

President William Ruto introduced the new university funding model to ensure that students receive financial assistance in alignment with their individual needs. The model categorizes students into five bands based on their families’ financial capacity.

Funding Bands

Migos explained that these bands were created to ensure that students from families who can afford the costs contribute their fair share to the educational expenses.

Additionally, the Ministry has developed a portal to facilitate the re-banding process for students who believe they have been incorrectly classified.

The portal allows students to appeal their assigned band if they can provide evidence that they have been placed in the wrong category. Migos assured that the Ministry is actively working to correct any misclassifications, ensuring that every deserving student receives the appropriate support.

Government Policy on Transition

The CS reaffirmed the government’s commitment to achieving a 100 percent transition rate for all learners.

He assured that within the next few weeks, the matter would be resolved, ensuring that every child who deserves to be in school will have access to education.

Despite the CS’s assurances, the new funding model has faced criticism. Leaders such as Narok Senator Ledama Olekina have described the model as confusing, arguing that it creates unfair classes of students.
