Exam Malpractice Won’t Affect Entire School Results Unless Coordinated, Says Education CS Ogamba.

Education cabinet secretary Julius Migos Ogamba has assured examination officials of his support for upholding credible examinations but clarified that he would not tolerate malpractice.

He confirmed that the Ministry would not nullify the results of entire centres due to isolated incidents unless the cheating appeared coordinated, thus protecting innocent candidates.

“This year, if there is any malpractice, we are not going to condemn the whole school, the whole centre, the whole number of people who are there but it is going to be individualised unless the cheating was coordinated,” Mr Ogamba said.

Monitoring of Compliance and Technological Reforms

In Machakos County, KNEC CEO Dr. David Njeng’ere reassured the public of limited cheating incidents, crediting reforms that address early exposure to examination materials.

He explained that schools now collect only the morning papers, which are administered, and candidates’ answer scripts are returned before collecting the afternoon papers.

This measure, along with regulations on mobile phone use, has greatly minimized cheating opportunities.

Dr. Njeng’ere reported compliance levels of 99.99% for the mobile phone restrictions, with only minor cases requiring enforcement. He also confirmed that the current short rains would not disrupt the KCSE exams, as helicopters were available to deliver papers to remote areas if necessary.

A recent investigation by Nation revealed that scammers exploit academic pressures to earn millions by selling KCSE exam papers at prices ranging from KSh 2,500 to KSh 18,000, depending on the number of papers required.

This investigation underscores the urgent need for tighter security measures and rapid legal responses to prevent similar fraudulent schemes from proliferating.
