On Saturday morning, a fire destroyed property of unknown value at Mavuti Secondary School in Machakos County. Witnesses reported that the fire broke out around 6 am, completely engulfing a dormitory housing approximately 165 Form Two students.

Hillside Endarasha Academy Case Pushed to December, Court Orders Fresh Safety Inspections

Firefighters from the Machakos County Government were quickly dispatched to the scene, joining forces with students to extinguish the flames before the fire could spread further.

Footage that has since gone viral showed the dormitory enveloped in smoke as both students and locals worked tirelessly to put out the blaze.

Some students stood by, watching their belongings go up in flames. Police officers arrived soon after and initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire.

Nationwide School Fire Incidents

This incident adds to the growing number of fire cases reported across the country over the past month.

It coincides with an ongoing nationwide mandatory school inspection aimed at curbing fire outbreaks in learning institutions.

In September, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba mandated the inspections following a spike in fire incidents, most notably the Hillside Endarasha tragedy, which resulted in the death of 21 pupils.

Inspection Measures and Safety Protocols

Ogamba emphasized that the inspections aim to ensure that schools comply with the safety guidelines outlined in the Safety Standards Manual.

The inspections, conducted by a multi-agency team from the Ministries of Education, Interior, Health, Public Works, County Government officials, and the Kenya Red Cross, are intended to identify areas requiring new safety interventions, particularly those unrelated to past indiscipline cases.
