Student Brutally Beaten by Prefects at Kaaga Boys High School, Principal Tries Cover-Up.
A parent has expressed deep concern over the mistreatment and assault of her child at Kaaga Boys High School in Meru County. Her son, a candidate for this year’s KCSE exams, was severely beaten by school prefects, leading to both physical injuries and emotional distress.
Due to fear, the boy has refused to return to school.
Graphic images shows the aftermath of the brutal assault on the 17-year-old student. The boy was accused of stealing Ksh.600 from a Form 1 student, although the prefects failed to provide evidence. According to the student, they waited until nightfall to launch the attack.
The teenager described being beaten for over an hour, with injuries to his ribs and eyes. The attack was especially distressing because it was carried out by fellow students who had been given authority by the school.

“Walinichapa for more than one hour…walinipiga hadi kwa ribs na macho,” said the boy.
Among the attackers were the dining hall prefects and the dormitory captain. The assault took place on the night of June 5, 2024, and the boy only managed to escape by running away at around 1am.
Mother’s Reaction and School’s Silence
Lilian Nyabuto, the boy’s mother, explained that her son was found walking naked for over 7 kilometers to Meru town, injured from the assault.
She received a call from a stranger and requested the Good Samaritan to take the boy to the Meru Police Station to report the matter.
Ms. Nyabuto was upset that the school never informed her about the incident, only learning of it when contacted from Meru town.
Medical reports confirmed that the student suffered serious injuries to his limbs, chest, and eyes.
The extent of the injuries, including bruises and lacerations, suggested that blunt objects, punches, and kicks were used in the assault. The victim also sustained eye injuries, with swelling and blurred vision.
School’s Response and Investigation
The school principal allegedly tried to persuade the student to lie about the incident, instructing him to tell investigators that he sustained the injuries while jumping over a fence, rather than during the assault.
“After the hospital, the principal told my son to lie to investigators that he got the injuries while jumping over the fence and not while in school,” said Ms. Nyabuto.
Despite repeated requests, the principal refused to grant an interview to Citizen TV, only acknowledging that the case was under investigation.
He denied the boy was assaulted by prefects, claiming the student was attacked by unknown people after running away from the school. However, he did not explain why the student fled.
The assault was reported at Meru Police Station on June 6, 2024, under OB.15/6/6/2024, but according to the boy and his mother, no progress has been made in the investigation.
The doctor’s report detailed the injuries the boy sustained, including bruises on his limbs and chest, as well as eye trauma resulting in blurred vision.

The possibility of the boy sitting for his KCSE exams is now uncertain, as he has not returned to school since the incident. His mother expressed frustration, noting that her son is at home while the perpetrators continue attending classes.
Despite following up with the Ministry of Education, Ms. Nyabuto has not received a solution. Although the police claim the investigation is ongoing, she remains uninformed about any progress
