Former Maseno School Chief Principal Paul Otula is Dead
The Maseno School community is in mourning following the sudden death of its former Chief Principal, Paul Otula, who died on Thursday, May 1. Reports indicate that he collapsed at his Nairobi residence and was pronounced dead due to cardiac arrest. His remains were later transferred to Lee Funeral Home.
Otula’s journey in education began in 1998 at Mang’u High School, where he served as a classroom teacher and basketball coach. His exceptional performance saw him rise through the ranks to become Deputy Principal and later Principal. He was appointed to head Maseno School in 2001, taking over from Walter Okumu Amadi.
Under his leadership, Maseno School experienced significant success, both academically and in extracurricular activities. Notably, the rugby team qualified to represent Kenya at the Dubai 7s, while the basketball team clinched the Engen Africa Youth Basketball Championship title in South Africa in 2003.
Career Transitions and Leadership Roles
Otula’s time at Maseno came to an end in 2017 following allegations of misconduct, which led to his interdiction. In 2018, he was appointed Principal of Sunshine Secondary School in Nairobi, a role he held until 2021. He then resigned to venture into politics, contesting for the Karachuonyo parliamentary seat in the 2022 General Elections. Despite a spirited campaign, he did not manage to secure the seat.
Beyond his administrative roles, Otula was a towering figure in Kenya’s basketball scene. Leveraging his physical presence and deep understanding of the game, he not only coached but also took up leadership positions. He was elected Chairman of the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) in 2008 and served multiple terms. By the time of his death, he was a member of the executive board of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK).
