Govt Allocates Funds for Teachers’ CBA, TSC Says As Unions Considers Strike Withdrawal
In a significant move, the Government has provided the necessary funds to implement the second phase of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for teachers.
This development follows a directive from President Dr. William Samoei Ruto, urging the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to engage with teachers’ unions to resolve ongoing disputes affecting public school teachers.
“After today’s discussions, the Commission is pleased to announce that the Government has provided funds for the implementation of the 2nd phase of the CBA with effect from 1st July 2024.” Said TSC boss Nancy Macharia
Key Resolutions from the Meeting
During a consultative meeting held on August 21st, 2024, between the TSC and the three major teachers’ unions—KNUT, KUPPET, and KUSNET—several issues were successfully addressed. The TSC has announced that:
- CBA Implementation: The Government has allocated funds to implement the second phase of the CBA, effective from July 1st, 2024.
- Career Progression: The TSC is reviewing the Career Progression Guidelines to further enhance teacher development.
- Healthcare Access: Teachers under the Teachers Medical Scheme can now access both public and private hospitals, ensuring better healthcare services.
- Retooling for CBC: The Government has also provided resources to retool teachers for the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) implementation.
- Teacher Promotions: A total of 51,232 teachers have been promoted through competitive processes, with an additional 20,000 teachers being promoted annually through common cadre.
Unions Consider Withdrawing Strike Notice
Given these positive outcomes, the unions have noted the TSC’s position and are expected to consult with their internal organs regarding the potential withdrawal of the strike notice.
“Effectively, the unions have noted the TSC position and agreed to consult their internal organs with a view to withdrawing the strike notice,” reads a circular from TSC.
This move would prevent any disruption of learning as schools prepare to open for the Third Term of 2024.
The TSC has expressed its gratitude to the Government for its support, even in challenging economic times, and to all teachers for their continued dedication.
The Commission has encouraged all teachers to report to schools on Monday, assured that the Government’s commitment to their welfare is being upheld.
This news is a reassuring sign of progress in ensuring a stable and conducive working environment for teachers, benefiting both educators and students across Kenya.
