Headteachers Advocate for TSC’s Pre-Vocational Teacher Recruitment in Special Schools.
Headteachers of special schools are urging the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to prioritize hiring pre-vocational teachers in the upcoming recruitment drive scheduled for January.
They emphasized that effective teaching in pre-vocational classes 1 and 2, equivalent to Grades 7 and 8, has been compromised due to a shortage of specialized teachers capable of handling these stages.
The school leaders expressed that the lack of pre-vocational teachers for stage-based learners in special schools nationwide has been an ongoing issue.
Despite repeated calls from stakeholders within the sector, recruitment efforts have largely neglected this essential requirement.

They believe that hiring these teachers would greatly enhance the learning experience for Special Needs Education (SNE) learners, making it more impactful and tailored to their needs.
Recommendations to TSC
In addition to advocating for pre-vocational teacher employment, the headteachers are urging TSC to establish a dedicated directorate at its headquarters to oversee and coordinate SNE activities.
Such an office, they argue, would ensure specialized support and a structured approach to addressing the unique needs of SNE learners.
The headteachers’ appeal aligns with recent announcements from the President and TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia, confirming the planned recruitment of 20,000 teachers in January 2025.
