HELB Funds to Be Disbursed in Two Days, Confirms Education CS.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced that students will receive their Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) funds within two days, once processing is finalized.
This follows the Ministry’s receipt of funds allocated for the loan program from the National Treasury.
Ogamba made these comments during a meeting with the Kenya University Student Organization (KUSO) leadership.
Present at the meeting were Higher Education PS Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, other education stakeholders, and university leaders.
Kennedy Kusero, the spokesperson for KUSO, expressed appreciation for students’ patience during the delay in disbursement.

He recognized their resilience and assured them that KUSO would remain committed to advocating for students’ rights and welfare.
Recent Student Protests
The announcement comes weeks after students held protests, demanding the swift release of HELB funds.
They also voiced their opposition to the new university funding model, claiming it hindered access to higher education for many students.
The High Court temporarily halted the implementation of the new funding model, following a case filed on October 13, 2023.

The case, brought forward by the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), Elimu Bora Working Group, Boaz Waruku, and the Students Caucus, argued that the model was discriminatory as it excluded thousands of students from higher education opportunities.
