HELB Releases Ksh1.56 Billion to Students
Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has released Ksh1.56 billion to support students and trainees in various institutions across Kenya, covering both tuition fees and living expenses.
This move was initiated in response to President William Ruto’s directive to accelerate financial aid distribution, as confirmed by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos.
A total of 65,126 students from different institutions are set to receive financial support, bringing much-needed relief. The allocation includes 31,263 trainees from Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions and 33,863 university students.
HELB notified the recipients through official communication channels and advised them to check their portals for confirmation.
So far, the government has provided Ksh32.7 billion in financial aid for the 2024/2025 fiscal year. This amount has benefited 195,522 TVET trainees and 390,612 university students, ensuring they can continue with their education without disruption.
The CS reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining financial assistance to students in higher learning institutions.
Challenges Leading to Delays
The President acknowledged that financial disbursement issues had posed challenges, delaying payments to students. He stated that on March 12, discussions were held with the Education Cabinet Secretary to address these hurdles.
The delays had previously led to unrest among university students, who staged demonstrations demanding timely financial aid.

The delay in releasing funds has sparked several student protests in the past. One notable demonstration occurred on February 3, when students from Kenyatta University blocked sections of Thika Road to pressure the government into releasing the funds.
The recent disbursement is expected to alleviate such concerns and provide stability for students relying on HELB loans.
