How to Confirm Your Hospital’s Registration with SHA.
On Monday, the Social Health Authority (SHA) unveiled a detailed list of healthcare facilities that the government has contracted to provide services to Kenyans enrolled in the SHA scheme.
This announcement comes after a week of confusion that spread across the country, especially affecting those suffering from chronic conditions such as renal diseases and cancer.
The new update brings relief to individuals who have already registered for the health scheme or have been automatically transitioned from NHIF.
Access to Public Healthcare
Kenyans whose primary healthcare facility is government-owned can now seamlessly receive services at all public hospitals, ranging from level 2 to level 6 facilities.
The full roll-out of the SHA scheme has been incorporated into these hospitals. To check if a specific healthcare facility is part of this list, Kenyans can visit the official SHA website at https://sha.go.ke/resources/categories/2.
The comprehensive list is divided into four main categories, one of which includes contracted County Government healthcare facilities.

In total, 4,760 public health facilities, ranging from dispensaries to teaching and referral hospitals across all 47 counties, are available to provide care.
Specialized Care for Chronic Illnesses
The Ministry of Health has separately categorized care centres for renal diseases and cancer. This was in response to initial confusion among chronic patients who were denied services in several hospitals.
According to the SHA list, 53 cancer care centres are located in 20 counties, with 14 of these facilities based in Nairobi. Meanwhile, renal disease services are provided in 180 facilities distributed across all 47 counties.
A controversy arose with private and faith-based healthcare providers when the roll-out of the SHA scheme began.
Several private hospitals turned away patients, citing the absence of government contracts, which left many patients, particularly those needing critical care like dialysis, stranded.
This sparked public outrage, especially after viral videos showed chronic patients being denied treatment despite being up-to-date with their SHA payments.
In response, it was announced that 1,577 private healthcare facilities had been contracted to offer services.
However, SHA later clarified in an October 6 press release that some of these facilities were duplicated, bringing the actual number of contracted private facilities to 1,442. This information can be verified on the SHA website.
Temporary Solution for Uncontracted Facilities
To alleviate public concern, SHA assured Kenyans in the same press release that it had reached an agreement with private and faith-based facilities that had not yet signed contracts.
These facilities were instructed to continue providing services to patients until the signed contracts were finalized.
The deadline for submitting these contracts was set for October 8, with the assurance that any expenses incurred by patients during this interim period would be fully covered by the government
