Interdicted Teachers to Undergo Rehabilitation Before Disciplinary Action in New TSC Reforms.

Japhet Kariuki, the Nyanza Teacher’s Service Commission (TSC) regional director, has unveiled new reforms aimed at improving teacher welfare and addressing disciplinary issues.

Under these reforms, teachers facing interdiction will first be required to undergo rehabilitation and support programs before any formal disciplinary action is taken.

This approach, he noted, is designed to align with the ongoing implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). Kariuki pointed out that discipline will no longer be secondary but a primary factor in career progression for educators.

Shifting Focus on Teacher Disciplinary Cases

Addressing teacher interdictions, Kariuki explained a change in how disciplinary matters, particularly alcoholism and absenteeism, will be managed. Rather than resorting to immediate interdiction, teachers facing such challenges will now undergo support programs. The focus will shift to mentorship, coaching, and rehabilitation, offering teachers an opportunity to improve before any drastic decisions are made.

He highlighted the Commission’s desire to provide adequate support to teachers struggling with issues like alcoholism or desertion, with a belief that mentorship and rehabilitation can be more effective than exclusion from the classroom. Kariuki clarified that the goal is not to expel teachers immediately but to help them overcome their personal challenges.

“Before interdiction, we want to help our teachers. If some are struggling with alcoholism or desertion, let’s support them through mentorship or even rehabilitation before pushing them out of class,” he said.

Vision for Teacher Support and Education Quality Improvement

Speaking during the second day of the Kenya Primary School Headteachers Association (KEPSHA) regional annual general meeting at Migori Stadium, Kariuki outlined the new reforms being rolled out by the Teacher’s Service Commission. These reforms are aimed at enhancing both the quality of education and the welfare of teachers.
