JSS Intern Teachers To Boycott Classes Until TSC Hires Them On Permanent Basis — KEJUSTA
More than 700 junior secondary school teachers in Nyeri County are determined to disrupt learning until the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) offers them permanent and pensionable employment.
They staged a rally in Nyeri Street, resolute in their determination to remain absent from schools until they receive employment letters and compensation for the ten months of underpayment.
Purity Wangeci, Chairperson of the Kenya Junior Secondary Teachers Association (KEJUSTA) in Nyeri, conveyed their stance, stressing the need for TSC to address their demands promptly.
“We have asked our members to stay away from schools until TSC grants us audience and issues us letters indicating that they have hired us on permanent and pensionable terms like the courts ordered,” said Wangeci.
Expressing discontent with the government’s handling of the crisis, the teachers highlighted their disappointment with the lack of engagement from the TSC.

They questioned why members of Parliament were distributing TSC letters instead of the commission itself, feeling marginalized and disregarded in the process.
TSC made promises last June, but no tangible progress has materialized, leaving the teachers feeling neglected.
Peter Kinyua, KEJUSTA’s organizing secretary in Nyeri, echoed the sentiment and emphasized the requirement of a written agreement with the employer before resuming duties.
Francis Wanjohi, chairman of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers Nyeri branch, called on TSC to comply with the court order mandating teacher hiring, warning of potential repercussions on the education system if the issues remain unaddressed.

Wanjohi criticized the government’s rush to implement a new curriculum without adequate measures to address human resource concerns.
He highlighted the disparity between the teachers’ workload and their meager salary of Sh17,000, advocating for prompt action from TSC to prevent further disruption in schools.
