KCSE Candidate Collapses in Exam Room After Slaps by Education Official.

A Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) student at Sironga Girls High School in Nyamira County collapsed on Tuesday morning after reportedly being slapped multiple times by an official from the Ministry of Education.

The incident unfolded during the morning exam session, in an exam room at the school located in the Bogichora area.

The Ministry official, Beatrice Kendi, a quality assurance officer, conducted a routine inspection in the exam room around 9 a.m. when she reportedly noticed the candidate chewing something that appeared suspicious.

According to a police report, Kendi questioned the student in an attempt to identify what was being chewed.

When the search yielded no contraband, the officer allegedly slapped the student multiple times, which later affected the candidate’s stability and concentration.

Student’s Medical Response and Recovery

The police report revealed that following the alleged assault, the student appeared restless.

When the exam session concluded at approximately 10 a.m., she collapsed in the classroom. Staff quickly took her to the school’s dispensary, where she received first aid and was subsequently discharged. The examination invigilator confirmed these events.

The incident led to an immediate visit by security and education officials to investigate the matter further, which has stirred considerable public outrage. Officials documented that Kendi had noticed the student’s chewing during her inspection, which prompted the intervention that led to the alleged slaps.

The school is currently under review by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), which has launched an inquiry into the incident to determine the circumstances and actions taken by the Ministry official.

This occurrence adds to a series of troubling events at Sironga Girls High School. Just two weeks prior, a form four student died following a fall from the second floor of a hostel building.

The student reportedly slipped while other students were heading to shower and sustained severe head injuries. She was rushed to Nyamira Level Five Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
