Kenyan Graduates Gain Competitive Edge in International Job Market.
Kenyan graduates often face challenges accessing the global job market due to limited knowledge and exposure. Many talented individuals fail to take advantage of international opportunities, leaving their potential untapped.
Mount Kenya University (MKU) and Roadstar Inc celebrated five years of collaboration last week, a partnership that has been instrumental in producing globally competitive graduates.
This milestone coincided with MKU’s 26th graduation ceremony, which highlighted the theme, “Internationalisation of University Education Towards Development of a Competitive Global Workforce.”
The partnership has significantly contributed to the university’s goal of shaping professionals who meet global standards.

The Roadstar Work-Study Project, central to this collaboration, has enabled students to work remotely in the US logistics sector, equipping them with practical skills and international exposure.
The Roadstar Work-Study Project
Launched in December 2019, the Roadstar Work-Study Project began with eight students and has since grown despite challenges like the Covid-19 pandemic.
Currently, 70 students participate in the program monthly, earning an average salary of Ksh 40,000. This initiative focuses on four key areas:

The program’s growth underscores its success in aligning students’ skills with international industry standards. Victoria Vas, CEO of Roadstar Inc, emphasized its role in fostering global competitiveness.
MKU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi, noted that the university had enrolled 60,721 students in the September-December 2024 semester.
During the ceremony, 7,448 graduates were conferred degrees, including 12 PhDs and 617 Master’s degrees. Prof. Jaganyi highlighted revamped programs aimed at addressing emerging market demands.
Uganda’s envoy to Kenya, Eunice Kigenyi, lauded MKU for adapting to global changes and fostering international collaborations. Notable partnerships include institutions in Germany and Austria, which have secured healthcare opportunities for MKU graduates.
Rankings and Regional Leadership
The ceremony followed MKU’s ranking as the third-best Kenyan university in the Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan Africa rankings.
Dr. Vincent Gaitho, Chairman of the University Council, affirmed the institution’s regional leadership in global integration, highlighting collaborations with entities like Kenyatta University Teaching, Research and Referral Hospital.
Prof. John Struthers, MKU’s Chancellor, discussed the university’s growth strategy, emphasizing international consortia. Dr. Jane Nyutu, Co-founder of MKU, outlined the university’s expanding presence in Uganda and other East African nations.

She noted that MKU’s new office in Kibuli, Kampala, would enhance access to quality education in South Sudan, Burundi, and the DRC.
Irene Nyagah, an MKU alumna, credited the university for instilling a global mindset and purpose-driven approach. MKU’s commitment to internationalization continues to set its graduates apart on the global stage.
