KEPSHA Chair Johnson Nzioka Dies in Mombasa Road Accident.
Kenya Primary Schools Headteachers Association (KEPSHA) chairperson, Johnson Nzioka, has tragically lost his life in a fatal road accident.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has paid tribute to the late Johnson Nzioka, recognizing his unwavering dedication to enhancing primary education in Kenya. His passing is considered a significant loss to the education sector.
Nzioka, aged 57, passed away on Sunday, February 16, following a tragic road accident in Athi River. He had dedicated 38 years to the education sector, serving as the headteacher of Donholm Primary School in Nairobi at the time of his death.
Dr. Nancy Njeri Macharia, the TSC Chief Executive, expressed that Kenya had lost a devoted education leader whose impact would be deeply felt within the teaching community and beyond.
She emphasized that his contributions to shaping primary education and his commitment to over 8 million learners would leave a lasting legacy in the sector.
A Life Dedicated to Education
Beginning his career as a classroom teacher in 1987, Nzioka steadily climbed the ranks, becoming a headteacher in 2012. His leadership abilities earned him the position of KEPSHA chairman, where he represented and guided over 23,000 primary school heads nationwide.
He was well-qualified, holding a Higher Diploma in Education Management from the Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI) and a Bachelor of Education degree from East African University.
His influence extended beyond administration, as he was actively involved in sports leadership, serving as Vice-Chairperson of the Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association and as Organising Secretary for the Federation of East African Primary Schools Headteachers.
Nzioka succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash that occurred on Sunday afternoon along Mombasa Road.
Reports indicate that his vehicle collided with a trailer near Athi River while he was driving towards Nairobi. It is believed that he was attempting to avoid another vehicle when his speeding car rammed into the stationary trailer, leading to the unfortunate accident.
Following his passing, several prominent figures in Nairobi expressed their condolences. Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino mourned him, describing him as a friend and extending heartfelt sympathies to his family.
Former Nairobi County Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko also acknowledged his tragic demise and prayed for his soul to rest in peace.
Legacy in Education Leadership
A veteran educator, Nzioka had dedicated over two decades to serving as a headteacher in various schools across Nairobi.
As KEPSHA chair, he led over 24,000 primary school heads, overseeing the education of more than eight million learners nationwide. His influence in the education sector was vast, having actively participated in co-curricular activities and holding key leadership positions.
Before assuming leadership of KEPSHA in 2021, he had served as the Sub-County Chairman of the Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association, later advancing to the role of National Vice-Chairperson in 2015.
His dedication to education leadership was further reflected in his role as the Organising Secretary of the Federation of East African Primary Schools Headteachers.
