KEWOTA Pushes for Teachers’ Breastfeeding Rooms in Schools

Nancy Rotich, Kericho County’s coordinator of the Kenya Women Teachers Association (KEWOTA), has stated that schools should provide specific areas for teachers to nurse their newborns.

She stated that KEWOTA is advocating for this idea nationwide to allow female teachers to fulfill their maternal duties with dignity.

Maids would use the rooms to bring young children to the institutions, where mothers could take a brief break to breastfeed them before returning them home once satisfied.

Speaking at the KEWOTA branch’s opening in Kericho, Rotich emphasized that the heads’ only responsibility was to reserve the rooms, which the association would then equip with the necessary items for the purpose.

Rotich, accompanied by KEWOTA Secretariat officials, stated that the breastfeeding centers are intended to reduce the inconveniences that female teachers endure when breastfeeding.

She stated that the group will tastefully equip and decorate the centers to soothe both the child and the mother.

During the event, officials also taught attendees about financial literacy to protect them from financial mistakes.

KEWOTA announced that they had initiated a table banking feature after realizing that many teachers were burdened by substantial loans from banks and Saccos, which charged high interest rates.

According to them, the table banking concept required a small group of teachers within a school to help augment their income.

The event encouraged teachers to use KEWOTA to enroll in the essential digitization courses needed to manage digitized Curriculum-Based Content (CBC) textbooks, emphasizing the global recognition of credentials earned after completing the skills for innovation classes.

The executives explained to teachers that KEWOTA was not a rival to other trade unions like KUPPET and KNUT but rather an empowerment organization.

According to Moses Okea, an education officer for the County Director of Education (CDE), instructors must work together to address a number of challenges.
