Kiambu County and KICD Roll Out Diploma Training Program for Non-Certified ECDE Teachers.
In a collaborative effort, Kiambu County and the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) have launched a training program for Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers.
The initiative targets ECDE teachers who were hired without diploma qualifications, ensuring they now have access to diploma courses.
The County government will fully sponsor the training, aiming to enhance the teaching skills of all 1,538 teachers across 524 public ECDE centers in Kiambu.
Governor Kimani Wamatangi inaugurated the three-day capacity-building workshop in Kiambu, expressing that the program would allow interested teachers to apply for support through the county’s Bursary Programme, which allocates Sh500 million annually.
The teachers will be required to submit their admission documents from accredited ECDE institutions, upon which the county will cover the tuition fees.
“This is part of the comprehensive training programme we are rolling out; however, the teachers would be required to submit admission documents from reputable institutions offering ECDE teaching courses, and the county would pay the fees,” he said.
Recruitment and Teacher-to-Learner Ratio
Governor Wamatangi outlined plans to recruit an additional 250 ECDE teachers by January next year.
This move aims to improve the teacher-to-learner ratio from the current 1:34, fostering more individualized attention and effective learning environments for young students.

Nancy Gichung’wa, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education, Gender, Culture, and Social Services, recognized the efforts of partners and stakeholders in supporting the county’s educational objectives.
She encouraged teachers to actively participate in the training, noting that lifelong learning and shared knowledge among educators enrich the sector.
Infrastructure Development and Future Support for Students
Last month, Governor Wamatangi inaugurated 109 new ECDE centers as part of Kiambu’s modernization drive, which aims to revamp all 524 public ECDE centers across the county.

He highlighted the county’s ongoing ECDE initiative’s impact, as the number of enrolled students has grown significantly from 2,000 to 8,000. Wamatangi also announced that, beginning in January 2025, the county will supply exercise books and school uniforms to ECDE students, relieving parents of this financial burden.
