KNEC Plans Retooling for Junior Secondary School Examiners

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) announced that it will soon begin retooling examiners for Junior Secondary Schools (JSS).

The initiative comes in response to concerns from teachers about the pilot study for Grade 9 exams in JSS, specifically regarding the roles of invigilators and examiners.

KNEC has invited some examiners to participate in the Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA) pilot exam scheduled for July 15-19, 2024.

The council emphasized that retooling of examiners for Junior Secondary is imminent, with some already invited for the upcoming KJSEA pilot.

Teachers are advised to remain patient during the rollout of the assessments. KNEC reassured that they have already established a database of 42,000 examiners to support the process.

Changes in Exam Schedule

Earlier this year, KNEC rescheduled the KJSEA and Kenya Prevocational Level Education (KPLEA) summative assessments. Initially set for July 1-5, 2024, the new dates are now July 15-19, 2024.

Current Grade 9 students are being prepared for exams next year. Following these exams, they will advance to Grade 10 at Senior Schools for three years under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in 2026.

Curriculum Pathways

During their time in Senior Schools, students will choose one of three pathways:

  1. STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
  2. Social Sciences: Humanities
  3. Performing Arts: Music and Athletics

This approach aims to facilitate specialization within the curriculum, aligning with the government’s educational goals.
