KNUT Calls for Enhanced Security for Teachers Ahead of National Exams.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has urged the government to make the safety of teachers a priority, especially as the national exam season approaches.
Malel Langat, the First National Vice Chairman of KNUT, highlighted the importance of implementing necessary measures to ensure that examinations proceed smoothly and without interruptions.
He emphasized the significance of safeguarding teachers, particularly in areas prone to insecurity, such as Lamu, Boni Forest, and the bandit-prone regions of the Rift Valley.
Langat stressed the need for the government to enhance security measures in these high-risk zones, where the safety of educators remains a significant concern.
He advocated for the Ministry of Education to work in collaboration with the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) to provide security support.

This collaboration, he suggested, could involve deploying helicopters to ensure adequate coverage in areas like Lamu and other volatile regions, thereby minimizing risks associated with exam administration.
Proposed Security Measures for Examination Season
The call for heightened security comes as part of broader measures to secure examination centers and ensure that the national exams proceed without disruptions.
According to Langat, the involvement of the KDF would help address challenges related to security threats, which could potentially affect the participation and safety of contracted officials, including invigilators, supervisors, and center managers responsible for overseeing the examination process.
Areas of Concern Identified
The regions identified for these enhanced security measures include:
- Lamu County: Known for sporadic insecurity and terrorist threats.
- Boni Forest: An area where security operations have been frequent due to militant activity.
- Rift Valley’s Bandit-Prone Regions: Areas that have experienced frequent banditry incidents, posing risks to teachers and examination officials.
By addressing these concerns, KNUT aims to ensure that both educators and students can focus on the examination process without fear for their safety.
