KNUT Calls for Promotion of 114,000 Teachers Stagnated for 17 Years
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is pressing for the promotion of 114,000 teachers who have remained in the same grade for up to 17 years, a promise made by the Kenya Kwanza government.
KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu highlighted this issue at the union’s Mombasa Branch annual general meeting held at St Luke Hall, attended by top union officials.
Oyuu reported that despite funds being allocated for teacher promotions, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has been slow to act, leaving many teachers in prolonged stagnation.

He emphasized that the TSC must fulfill its responsibilities, as the current situation is unacceptable.
Criticizing the TSC’s method of announcing promoted teachers solely by their TSC numbers, Oyuu stated that including names would provide clarity on regional favoritism.
Previous Government Allocations
Last year, Julius Melly, chairman of the Education Parliamentary Committee, noted that the National Treasury had allocated Sh1 billion for the promotion of 13,713 teachers.
However, this amount is only half of the Sh2.2 billion required to advance primary, secondary, and college teachers to the next grade.
