KNUT Demand Salary Increase for Primary School Heads Managing Junior Secondary .

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has urged the government to reassess the salaries of primary school heads who have taken on additional roles by overseeing junior secondary schools (JSSs) as part of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

KNUT has highlighted that these school heads are now facing increased responsibilities that demand a compensation review.

No Pay Rise for JSS Heads Despite Added Duties – CS Ogamba

At the Kenya Primary School Headteachers Association (KEPSHA) annual conference in Mombasa on Tuesday, KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu emphasized the challenges faced by school heads managing comprehensive schools, which encompass early childhood development (ECD), primary, and junior secondary levels.

“Managing all three school levels in comprehensive schools – ECD, primary, and JSS – is difficult. We expect the education minister to agree with the Teacher Service Commission (TSC) on a review of the heads’ remuneration,”

Oyuu stated that balancing the requirements of all three levels has become a demanding task.

He called upon the Ministry of Education to collaborate with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to reconsider the current remuneration for school heads to reflect these expanded duties.

Call for Formal Recognition and Endorsement

KEPSHA chairman Johnson Nzioka expressed that, since January 2023, primary school heads have been tasked with overseeing JSSs without any salary increment to acknowledge their additional roles.

He pointed out the ambiguity surrounding their titles, noting that these heads have been informally recognized as principals but lack official endorsement.

Nzioka appealed for formal recognition of their role as principals to align their titles and responsibilities with their workload.

“We do not know if they are principals or heads of institutions. At a certain stage, they have taken the title of principal and we plead for endorsement now,” Nzioka said.
