KNUT Demands TSC Recall of Show-Cause Letters as Intern Teachers Protest

The Kenya National Union of Teachers announced on Thursday that it is taking over the employment contract issues concerning Junior Secondary School intern teachers, who are currently protesting across the country.

The union also demanded that the Teachers Service Commission recall all show-cause letters recently sent to the JSS interns’ teachers who have not reported for work.

Knut Secretary General Collins Oyuu expressed his opinion that the teachers were right to a wider extent.

He highlighted that the protests and impasse between the JSS interns and their employer are negatively impacting millions of learners.

Oyuu stated that the union is prepared to oversee the return-to-work arrangement with the employer on behalf of intern teachers.

Oyuu explained that intern teachers, although not employed on terms allowing union membership, are associate members as per Article III (15) of the Knut Constitution.

He also called for the TSC to develop a framework to help resolve the dispute with interns.

Oyuu urged all demonstrating teachers to report to their work stations immediately, stating that Knut has already taken over the case. He emphasized that no teacher involved in the demonstrations should face victimization.

Regarding the union’s stance on interns, Oyuu remarked that they should not face discrimination simply because they are not on permanent, pensionable terms and do not contribute to the union.

He asserted that teachers should not be referred to as interns if they have trained and qualified.

Oyuu disclosed that he has already engaged TSC on the matter and insisted that TSC adhere to the Code of Regulations for Teachers (2015) in the recruitment and employment processes.

He sought an amicable resolution to the impasse between the interns and TSC. Additionally, Oyuu acknowledged that the matter is before the court and advised the interns to accept Knut’s intervention since the union has shown interest in finding a lasting solution.

Furthermore, Oyuu noted the union’s earlier suspicion that TSC would issue show-cause letters to intern teachers with the intention of initiating disciplinary action against them. He confirmed that these teachers have indeed received such letters.
