KNUT to Defend Sacked JSS Teachers, Criticizes Denominational Interference in Teacher Postings
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Masaba North Sub-branch has committed to always defending Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers disciplined by their employer for participating in a strike.
Masaba North Sub-county Executive Secretary, Joseph Arasa, stated that the union would plead with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to consider reinstating some JSS teachers who violated the regulations.
“Almost all of them downed their tools but those who were remorseful are back enjoying their work but the obstinate ones are now crying for help,” he said.
The secretary expressed regret that out of over 10,700 JSS teachers, only 742 were removed from the TSC payroll due to their misdemeanor.
He advised these teachers to be humble, explaining that they were warned about the repercussions of their actions.
Despite their dismissal, they were given a second chance to apologize but refused, and now they seek the union’s rescue.
Secretary Arasa addressed parents, teachers, and learners at Eronge DEB Primary School in Kitutu Masaba Constituency during a retirement ceremony on June 1 for a teacher named Nyakoe.
“When the government trains teachers it does not indicate their denominations on their certificate but a teacher is mandated to teach in any school anywhere in and outside the country,” he said.

He urged teachers to live exemplary lives, leaving a lasting legacy upon retirement. Arasa also requested school sponsors to refrain from interfering with school operations, suggesting they should focus on providing spiritual nourishment instead of overstepping their mandate.
He accused some unnamed denominations of choosing and dictating the posting of teachers based on their denomination, emphasizing that government-trained teachers are mandated to teach in any school regardless of location or denomination.
