KNUT Wants TSC to Prioritize P1 Teachers in Upcoming Recruitment.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Trans Mara branch has called for the prioritization of P1 teachers in the forthcoming teacher recruitment exercise.
Branch Executive Secretary, Willy Korir, emphasized that the abolishment of the P1 certificate leaves its holders at a significant disadvantage.
Korir highlighted that a considerable number of P1 teachers across the country have remained unemployed for years.
Speaking in Kilgoris town, he urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to focus on P1 teachers in the recruitment planned for January 2025.

He pointed out that many P1 certificate holders have suffered from joblessness for an extended period.
TSC to Recruit 20,000 Teachers
Korir’s appeal follows the announcement by the TSC regarding the recruitment of 20,000 teachers in January 2025.
This initiative aims to address the current teacher shortage in Kenya. However, Korir criticized the preference given to diploma and degree holders in past recruitments, describing the trend as unfair to P1 certificate holders.
While welcoming the recruitment announcement, Korir underscored the vital role teachers play in achieving the nation’s educational objectives. He stressed that the contribution of teachers is crucial to advancing Kenya’s academic agenda.

Additionally, Korir expressed concerns regarding the Social Health Authority (SHA). He stated that despite contributing to the scheme since its inception, many teachers have faced difficulties in accessing healthcare services.
Korir urged the government to resolve the issues with the SHA, ensuring that both teachers and their families can benefit from the program.
