KUPPET Advocates for Risk Allowance and Funding for Science Teachers.
Makueni County Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Chairman Erastus Kimetu (Brigadier) has urged the government to introduce a risk allowance for science teachers. He pointed out that teaching science is inherently hazardous and requires significant time and effort.
Kimetu noted that handling chemical reagents poses substantial risks for educators, necessitating better compensation and insurance coverage. He emphasized the need for science teachers to be adequately supported in their profession.
“Handling chemical reagents is not easy for science teachers, and there is a need for better pay and insurance coverage,” he stated.
Kimetu also appealed for increased government investment in school infrastructure, citing difficulties in teaching science subjects effectively. He highlighted that some schools lack essential learning materials, leaving students unfamiliar with fundamental scientific concepts.
He stressed that without proper resources, science education remains ineffective. Schools should be well-equipped to ensure that students receive quality instruction and practical experience in science.
Addressing the necessity of modernizing education, Kimetu urged teachers to integrate advanced technology into learning. He asserted that in the age of Artificial Intelligence, outdated teaching methods must be replaced with innovative approaches to benefit students.
He expressed that focusing on traditional topics, such as counting the legs of a grasshopper, is no longer sufficient. Instead, the education system should embrace technological advancements to prepare students for the evolving global landscape.
As the science patron at Makueni Boys, Kimetu shared his confidence in the school’s continued success. Reflecting on their performance in the previous year, he proudly mentioned that the school ranked second in the Eastern region and 13th nationwide in the science fair competition.
He credited this success to the unwavering support of the chief principal, the dedication of teachers—whom he referred to as principal advisors of the projects—and the students’ hard work. He remained optimistic that Makueni Boys would continue excelling in future competitions.
