KUPPET Demands Teachers’ Standing Allowance in New CBA.
Members of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) are advocating for additional benefits specific to the teaching profession.
Ronald Tonui, the KUPPET Assistant Treasurer, emphasized that other professions already receive allowances for strenuous work, and teachers should also be granted similar benefits.
He highlighted that the new demand would be included in their upcoming Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), expected to be signed next year.
Among the unique demands brought forward by KUPPET is the introduction of a standing allowance for teachers.
Tonui argued that teachers, especially those instructing subjects like mathematics, often have to stand while teaching, and this physically demanding aspect of their work should be compensated.

The union believes that this standing allowance should be included in the next CBA, differentiating it from other allowances, such as extraneous allowances, which have been awarded in other professions.
The standing allowance, Tonui noted, is a unique aspect of the teaching profession and should be recognized to compensate teachers for the physical strain associated with standing during lessons.

He pointed out that other professions receive extraneous allowances, but teachers have yet to receive any. The inclusion of a standing allowance in teachers’ payslips was deemed a priority.
