KUPPET Leadership Coup: Three Top Officials Face Disciplinary Action.

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has begun disciplinary action against three senior officials accused of forgery and attempting to overthrow the union’s leadership.

The officials involved include Ronald Tonui, the Assistant National Treasurer; Sammy Chelanga, the Secretary for Tertiary Institutions; and Samuel Orwa, the Bomet Branch Secretary.

In a letter dated October 2, 2024, the three officials were summoned to appear before KUPPET’s Disciplinary Committee on October 11.

They are accused of various offenses, including authoring and distributing a fake resignation letter purportedly from the Secretary-General, causing division within the union, and disrupting the office’s operations.

Allegations Against Ronald Tonui

Ronald Tonui is primarily accused of circulating the fake resignation letter. He is also charged with writing to the Public Service Board, falsely claiming to represent the union in media matters without proper authorization.

Tonui is further accused of bribing the secretary to the Secretary-General to obtain the union’s rubber stamp, digital signature, unauthorized documents, and confidential information.

Additionally, it is alleged that he tried to undermine the Secretary-General’s office by spreading false information and attempting to take control of the union’s finances and power structures.

Charges Against Other Officials

Similar accusations have been made against Samuel Orwa, the Executive Secretary of the KUPPET Migori Branch, including involvement in circulating the fake resignation letter and efforts to undermine the Secretary-General.

Although Sammy Chelanga is mentioned in the case, specific allegations against him were not detailed.

The accused officials will be given an opportunity to defend themselves and present witnesses during the disciplinary hearing.
