KUPPET Raises Mental Health Concerns Among Teachers
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has expressed concern over the increasing mental health issues among teachers in the South Rift Region, identifying gambling as the primary cause.
Mary Rotich, the Executive Secretary of the Kericho Branch, reported that these mental health challenges have resulted in suicides and other societal issues.
She noted that over four teachers have taken their own lives, and several others are hospitalized due to depression, a situation she described as worrying.
Rotich emphasized the necessity for immediate action to address these issues. She highlighted the importance of mutual support among teachers, stating that those exhibiting signs of depression require urgent help.
“Over 4 tutors have committed suicide while others are hospitalized due to depression in our county. This is worrying and urgent action needs to be taken,” she said.
Rotich also pointed out that gambling exacerbates the problem, as financial struggles compel teachers to seek luck through gaming.

She urged the government to impose an immediate ban on gambling as a measure to achieve financial stability for teachers.
